Elimination of the Filibuster?

Mark Noonan over at Blogs for Bush is pushing for the elimination of the filibuster from the Senate rules. Two things bother me when I read his post. First, as Republicans we must be aware that a time will come, however far away it may be, that we will be the minority party again. Politics is cyclical, and we can be sure this will eventually happen. Because of this we must be careful as to what we do while we are in power, lest we give the other side greater power down the road.

Secondly, this section of his post struck me as odd,
While it is an important point to bring judicial nominations to an up or down vote in the Senate, there is a larger issue at stake here in 2005. It has come to a point where the Democratic Party has shown itself entirely too irresponsible to hold any political power in the United States - and the only power they still hold is the power of filibuster. This power must be taken away from them, much as we take away from an irresponsible child the power to hurt himself.
This is not typically the kind of sentiment you find on their blog, and it put me off a bit. While it is true that the donks have sunk to unbelievably low levels, this comes off as nothing more than a grab for power when cast in that light. The "disenfranchisement" that the Democrats harp about without cause would now would be real in the perceptions of the common man if we take away the filibuster because they are too "irresponsible".

Now I realize that the filibuster is not something that was conceived in the Constitution as a part of Congress, but it has been around a long time, and served its purpose for good and bad as Noonan noted. For these reasons we should think carefully about its elimination, and if it is eliminated we must go on the offensive and explain to the American people why this was done -- because good people who are qualified judges are being denied the opportunity to serve their country due to unprecedented and harmful political gamesmanship.
