NEA gave over $1 million to John Kerry; facing IRS audit

Click over to Captain's Quarters to read all about this. There is a really great write-up over there, but here is the rundown from the Washington Times:
The National Education Association (NEA) pumped more than $1 million into 67 mailings for the Kerry-Edwards presidential ticket and against President Bush in the past four months, Federal Election Commission reports show.

Twenty-one NEA mailings in behalf of the Kerry campaign, produced by an Arlington firm whose clients include the Democratic Party, went out to hundreds of thousands of public school employees across the country this month at a cost of $468,333. The union paid for all the mailings from its general operating budget, not its political action committee, the reports show.

'Captain Ed' suggests in his post that there is reason to believe that there has been overt collusion between the DNC and the NEA. You may think this is a no-brainer, but its is illegal, so they could be in real trouble.

I have a real problem with unions' political involvement, especially public employee unions (which I disagree w/ their existence, but that is another post). The amount of money and influence they have in the political process is bothersome to say the least, but the fact that it is virtually one-sided is even worse. Linda Chavez has a great book on the topic, you should definitely check it out.
